5 Shows to Snuggle Up and Watch This Winter

She In The CLE will be on vacation until 2017, but before we unplug for the holidays, we wanted to say Thank You for an amazing year! We hope you have enjoyed hearing from all our amazing contributors this year, and we’re looking forward to another great year in 2017!

Well, winter is officially here. There’s snow on the ground, the temperatures have dropped into the the low double digits, and frankly, we’re going to be here for a while. And what better way to hibernate this winter than snuggling up on the couch with a glass of wine, your TV, and maybe even a loved one ? In order to write this post, I crowdsourced recommendations from 4 other Cleveland women to find out what they’re watching this winter, and what they like about the shows they recommend. Here goes:

Julie recommended The Affair – a story of two marriages destroyed by one affair, and the aftermath of said affair.

When I asked Jules what she liked about the show she said “I don’t know if I really like it, I’m just roped in.” After I told her that it wasn’t exactly a resounding recommendation, she revised her original statement to say that the story is really twisted with complex characters, and while its hard to like the show because of the topic, it is still worth watching.

Where: The series airs on Showtime, Season 1 and 2 are available on Netflix

Ashley is currently watching American Crime, which is an anthology crime series that explores a single crime over an entire season.

Ashley said she likes the show because the concept is interesting and the cast overlaps across both seasons, although they play different roles since each season explores a different crime.

Where: The show airs on ABC but is available on Netflix

Amanda is watching Masters of Sex a period piece set in the 1950s through the 1970s that explores the relationship between two pioneering researchers of human sexuality.

In Amanda’s own words, “the show reminds me of Mad Men, and I really like the character development and fashion of that era.”

Where: HBO. Season 1 & 2 are available on Netflix

Erika is watching House of Cards, the wildly popular American political drama that features an outstanding cast led by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.

Erika has mixed feelings about the show – she likes the drama, but not the politics. I’ve watched this show myself, and I have to agree with her – the drama is awesome, but if this is even a somewhat accurate representation of politics, then it is a dirty dirty business.

Where: Seasons 1-4 on Netflix

For myself, I’m deviating from an all-Netflix recommendation list, and sharing one of my favorite shows on Amazon (free with Prime), The Man In the High Castle.

This show tells an alternate history of the United States, where World War II was won by Germany and Japan, and half the country is under Nazi Germany, and the other half under Japan, and a small group of rebels trying to fight both regimes. I find this series both fascinating and repulsive — the Nazi symbols and salutes are really disturbing (especially in light of the Alt-right these days) but the storytelling is pretty intriguing. I will say that critics either love or loathe this show. I’m not a critic, but I recommend it, however, I will warn you that if you binge before bedtime, you might just have some really messed up dreams.

There you have it: 5 dramas to watch this winter. What are you watching these days? Please leave us your recommendations in the comments!

  • The Affair…I’ll add that Pacey from Dawson’s Creek is on this one and he is delicious. Stranger Things on Netflix, to me, is like ET for adults. Nostalgic, twisted and funny. For those who want something more light-hearted a few of my favorite new Hallmark movies that won’t make you cringe: Finding Father Christmas, Journey Back to Christmas and The Mistletoe Promise (because I ❤️ Jamie King).

  • I just began watching The Crown on Netflix and I’m a bit obsessed. History, drama and fancy English dresses all wrapped in one. I also recently dove into The Killing. It is heavy stuff but the characters are amazing! So much good tv, so little time!

  • I highly recommend Good Girls Revolt on Amazon Prime. It’s loosely based on a lawsuit that was filed by women that worked for a magazine where they claimed sexual harassment and weren’t given equal opportunities to write or report. The show was cancelled by Amazon and they have received a ton of backlash because the show got great ratings but they are hoping another network will pick it up. It’s a great female empowerment show!
