It’s summertime!!! Grab your cover-up, Target fedora and some limes for all those delicious adult beverages. But before you squeeze your fruit and yourself into that dusty tankini don’t forget about the sunscreen. Not just for your limbs, but your hair and every other part of your body that is dying to soak up some rays.
We live on a lake, so the next three months will be spent outside trying to keep three small kids alive. Shade is limited and there’s lots of water lapping away whatever I slather on. And let’s be honest, I like to look put together for all those #lakelife selfies with the other mama bears.
So I tracked down make-up artist and skin whisperer, Elizabeth Cook to get her take on creating the picture-perfect summer glow. When she’s not creating masterpieces at New York Fashion Week or on set in hip places like, ya know Miami or Paris, she’s here in her hometown Cleveland. Lucky for us, she not only shares how to easily tackle the biggest beauty busters, but all her summer favs are cruelty free and won’t break the bank. She even tells us where to find them. Scroll on!
Let’s start with something simple. What’s your everyday summer skin go-to?
Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35, $25. (Glossier.com)
This SPF is a clear watergel formula filled with active microcapsules that instantly absorbs into skin with no greasy residue and zero white cast. ZERO. Fantastic makeup primer or use on its own. It sets completely weightless.
How do I get beach hair versus my-brush-cries-when-I-pick-it-up hair?
Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, $28. (Aveda.com)
Super light and easy hair mist that doesn’t weigh your hair down, but also protects your hair’s health and color! The wintergreen and cinnamon bark oils in its formula protects your hair from UVA/UVB damage, while its antioxidants keep free radicals away.
I’d love to keep my lips from cracking without applying chapstick every 5 minutes.
Ice Jam Lipstick, $23.50 (iceandjam.com)
This is a woman-owned and created local brand (Rocky River!) that produces my all time favorite lipstick. It contains Cupuacu, an Amazonian Superfruit cultivated responsibly in Brazil, packed with hydration and nutrient-dense vitamins known to reverse the effects of free radicals to the skin! It’s also a natural protectant of UVA and UVB rays. Every tube has a flip mirror perfect for touchups as well as a hidden dose of uncolored Cupuacu Butter in the lid. My fav shades: Willy, the most perfect nude. Thank You Come Again, true red. Motherflocker, Demi matte blue-red.
How do I look sun kissed without actually tanning?
Aveda Inner Light Tinted Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 15, $32. (Aveda.com)
Sheer, dewy, GLOWING coverage…feels weightless on the skin. One of my tried and true summer favorites! Provides broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays and instantly increases radiance up to 24 percent! It’s also hydrating and non-acnegenic.
The sun brings out my inner Grease Queen. Um, help!
Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen Mineral Makeup, $47. (JaneIredale.com)
If you’re worried about shine and oil control, this light, mineral foundation is great! SPF 30, soothing to the skin, and water resistant for 40 minutes, also wonderful for face AND body. Great on its own or for setting your foundation/tinted moisture.
I’m kind of a sweater, but deodorant melts in my beach bag.
Underarm Deodorant Wipes $9. (PacificaBeauty.com or Target)
Perfect to keep in your purse, pool tote or gym bag for a quick freshen up on a hot day! Odor-neutralizing, aluminum-free wipes are great for underarms but I also love them for under your boobs, inner thighs, and other warm/stagnant areas, too (external use only). They smell SO good and make you feel fresh again. My favorite sent is Coconut Milk & Essential Oils.
What’s a quick refresh when I’m at the beach or flying to one?
Nudestix Nudies All Over Face Color & Glow Sticks, $30. (Nudestix.com)
Summer makeup made easy. Their selection of matte and glow formulas are made for eyes, cheeks, and lips! Great for adding a healthy glow and some color to the skin without any heaviness like a full face of makeup in the heat. They come in convenient twist up chubby tubes and are considered a solid by TSA! (Yay for freeing up space in our liquids bag!) There’s even a fab synthetic stippling brush on the other end of the tube for easy blending.
Speaking of getaways, how about a mask for girl’s weekend?
Pacifica Mattify Prep Pineapple & Hyaluronic Facial Mask, $4. (PacificaBeauty.com or Target)
This is great before makeup application on a hot sticky day! Helps clear oil and clarify without over drying your skin. Enzymatic action preps your skin and Hyaluronic acid provides oil-free hydration.
