In our Features series this week, we’re speaking with the lovely Jennie Doran of R/S Boutique. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit this charming store in Ohio City and speak with Jennie, you are missing out on a truly joyful experience. Jennie is like a ray of sunshine!
Room Service is a lifestyle retail boutique, offering beautifully designed goods for your home and your person. We operate on the idea that great design is important to everyday life. From the gifts you give, to the items you wear, to those you bring into your home- beautiful, functional goods improve the quality of life. Our assortment rotates regularly and includes apparel, tableware and kitchen goods, children’s apparel and gifts, stationary, jewelry and accessories (and really anything we find gorgeous!)Additionally, we launched our in-house design firm, R/S Design, in January of 2014. Our expertise creating effective and engaging environments and experiences in our shop led to the natural extension of offering that service to other businesses and individuals. We have been thrilled to work with clients including Vision Yoga, Inca Tea, Brite Winter, and The Greenhouse Tavern, among other businesses and residential clients.
Oh, if only I had a straight forward answer.. the entrepreneurial spirit runs throughout my family in various iterations. Prior to Room Service, and the development of it’s sister company, R/S Design; I had always been drawn to being a part of independently owned businesses- from event production, to fashion, to art dealing and finally, to retail. I am energized by the ability to create my own work flow, to make choices that directly affect the viability and profitability of my brand and company. Also, the remarkable daily opportunity to express myself as a designer, to support my family, and those of the people we employ-all while providing meaningful goods and services to the larger community. That, and I apparently I like a challenge….
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
It’s advice more learned than taken initially: trust your team. Invest the effort (and capital) to build one and trust it. I have in the past, subconsciously painted myself into the corner of being “the only one” able to express my vision, to carry the mission of Room Service- and its simply not true. It is a position I think a lot of owners and entrepreneurs of all stripes fall prey to at times.I have found those (and married one!) that believe wholeheartedly in what we do, and see avenues to move it forward that perhaps I may not have. It is my job as a creative, effective leader (these are not mutually exclusive!) to empower my team to drive our brand forward- to tell stories through our work and our products, and present it to our customers and our community. Trusting your teams ability to inhabit your ethos, and to transmit it to the consumer is incredibly empowering.
Definitely, trust your team.
What is your spirit animal?
Oh gracious… as an urban farmer, I would have to say, (and I know it is less than glamorous) a chicken. They are remarkable providers, tireless workers, and they are a critical part of the larger whole of our small farm. (And it doesn’t hurt that they are beautiful to boot..). I like to think that we do the same through Room Service- we work incredibly hard to provide value and beauty, while positively impacting the small business landscape of Cleveland.
Our brick and mortar is located at 2078 W. 25th St in Ohio City’s Market District (just next door to Campbell’s Popcorn, yum!)We are open there 7 days a week Monday through Saturday 11-6pm, and Sunday 11-5.You can find us online, where we post a rotating assortment of our goods, as well as events and images of our space and work at www.rscleveland.com. We would love to invite you March 20th to our 2nd Annual Seed Swap, in partnership with the Cleveland Seed Bank. Sustainable food is enormously important to Andrew and I, and as fairly new urban gardeners, we have found so much support and knowledge in the vibrant Cleveland gardening scene.R/S’s Seed Swap brings together veteran and newbie growers alike to trade seeds and seedlings, and share a vibrant knowledge of what its like to grow your own food here in Northeast Ohio. We invite anyone with an interest in growing to attend, no seeds necessary!!! We’ll have refreshments and great garden takeaways- we invite you to come celebrate Spring with us!!Seed Swap at Room ServiceEvent details online at www.rscleveland.com/the-happenings
