It’s that time again. With 2015 coming to a close and 2016 less than 24 hours away, it seems like everywhere you look people are sharing their plans for the New Year. If I were to scroll through my Twitter timeline, I could bet you money there would be a girl tweeting about losing half her body weight by March or a guy sharing his gym promise. Not only can these goals be completely unreasonable, and in some cases unhealthy, they’re also not very fun. New Year’s resolutions are defined as “a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice,” and you don’t always have to go to extremes trying to form a better you. Sometimes it’s the simple things that can make this year a fun one. So here are 5 easy New Year’s resolutions that you won’t want to quit by February.
#1: Eat breakfast food even when it’s not breakfast time
This one might not be for everybody. There are some people out there who absolutely hate breakfast food and there are some people (such as myself) who survive off of cereal and waffles. And speaking for all of those people, let me just tell you it is a great life to live. I have a hard time putting the happiness I feel when I’m eating a pancake at 3 in the afternoon into words. Maybe its the fluffiness of the pancake or the power that I feel knowing that I don’t need these carbs but am eating them anyway. But, there is no easier way to bring warmness back into your life after a hard day than breaking out the breakfast food.
#2: Invest in a robe
If you were not already aware, I am 14 years old and I can testify that my fuzzy purple robe was probably the best gift I’ve ever gotten. I will admit that I was a little skeptical at first because I could’ve sworn that my grandma had the same robe, but once I put it on, there was no going back. That robe is like a little slice of heaven covered in soft fur ready to welcome me into a state of bliss anytime I need it. My family continues to tease me daily about my love for the robe and how often I wear it (which is every day), but it’s only because they don’t understand just how much better that piece of clothing made my life. When that softness hits my body, the stress seems to melt away. I will tell you right now that the $30.00 spent on a robe, could be the best spent $30.00 of your life.
#3: Pull up your hair more
Almost everybody’s heard of a messy bun before, simply because it might be the world’s best invention since Netflix. But sadly the messy bun has a habit of being perfectly messy and not “normal person without a live-in hairdresser” messy. So this New Year’s resolution is about not caring if your messy bun looks like it belongs on a red carpet or not, it’s about pulling your hair off your neck and giving your beautiful face some breathing room. My friends make fun of me because by the end of the day it seems like my hair always went from being down or in a cute braid or ponytail to a big ball on the top of my head. I just find that I think better without hair falling in my face every two seconds and I always find myself having an easier day when I’m not stressed out about how frizzy my hair is at all times. So this year just throw up your hair and give the heat tools a break. Your tresses and your neck will thank you one day!
#4: Take a Bath
I only started taking baths again this year and once again I was a little bit skeptical because I haven’t taken one since I was 5. It seemed kind of like a babyish thing to do, but WOW was I wrong. Sitting in the bathtub, I felt a sense of peacefulness (probably because the bathroom door blocked out my mom yelling at me to clean my room) but still, there is something incredibly relaxing about sitting in the little bathtub with nothing but your thoughts. The bath doesn’t even need to be a bubbly one. Bubbles are a lot harder to make than you think and the bubbles only end up staying for about 5 minutes. Plus if you make every bath a bubble bath then you’ll be washing all of the money you spend on soap literally, right down the drain. But don’t underestimate the power of water – it can relax your mind, allow you to think clearly and keep you clean!
#5: Listen to acoustic music
This one also might not be for everybody since everyone likes different types of music, but it is my favorite on the list. I tend to listen to acoustic music when I’m taking a bath because sometimes silence can feel awkward even if you’re the only one in the room. I am going to recommend my favorite channel on spotify.com called “acoustic pop” because it takes all of the songs you hear everyday on the radio and slows them down. The song selection is nice because if you’re anything like me and enjoy pretending you’re a famous singer and these are all your own hit singles, then it’s really great to be familiar with the words of the song. Acoustic music is also enjoyable when you’re trying to concentrate on something or working hard because it’s not loud enough to make you want to get up and hit the whip or bust out your best dance moves but still keeps your room from having an eerie silence that you’re trying desperately to ignore. For example, I am currently writing this to the sound of Ed Sheeran’s angelic voice coming from my headphones.
Despite how simple all of these resolutions seem to be, you may still find yourself wondering what the heck happened by June, when you realize that somewhere between spring break and the end of the school year, your New Year’s resolution melted away with the snow. So this year don’t make it so hard for yourself and set some some goals that you’ll want to continue way after 2016. Go ahead and throw up your hair, put on your robe with the bath ready and the music playing as you ring in the new year.
Just don’t forget the pancakes!
